Shape Of Betts Meadow, The
Published in Library Binding by Millbrook Press (April, 2002)
Authors: Meghan Nuttall Sayres and Joanne Friar
Average review score:

Excellent Book! My 6 year old can't put it down.
I just read this book to my six year old son. The first words he said after finishing the book we're "mom, I really love this book. Maybe when I'm big I can buy some land and do the same thing". He's not really the type to have an opinion about books, so from my son, thats a compliment.

The way the book explains the process of habitat restoration was accurate, interesting and inspirational. My son also found the drawings captivating, he spent several minutes looking at every detail on each page. I would recommend it to anyone from 5 to 105.

Sharp Focus: A First Daughter Mystery
Published in Hardcover by Thomas Dunne Books (July, 2003)
Authors: Susan Ford and Laura Hayden
Average review score:

A cozy with an intriguing lead protagonist
Being the First Daughter of US President Elliot James Cooper carries enough responsibilities for any person to cope with, but Eve Cooper also shares First Lady chores with her aunt since her mom is dead. Thus Eve journeys to the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs where her dad will provide a congratulatory speech to the graduates at the commencement ceremony. Part of her itinerary is to fly in an Academy glider, so Eve hides her fears and accomplishes the task.

However, not long afterward, a glider smashes into the nearby mountains, killing one person and seriously injuring an another. Feeling paranoid, Eve wonders whether someone meant to assassinate her, but blew the assignment. Soon her theory proves correct as someone tries to kill the First Daughter. However, Eve refuses to remain in SHARP FOCUS as a lame duck target by attempting to uncover the identity of the executioner although that leaves her doubly exposed.

The key to the second First Daughter mystery (see DOUBLE EXPOSURE) is the insight into a First Family provided by co-author Susan Ford, a former White House resident. The tale is an amateur sleuth cozy rather than a deep political thriller, but Eve is a delightful protagonist especially when she performs required tasks in which she must hide her apprehension or disdain from the ever-present media. Fans who enjoy a cozy with an intriguing lead protagonist will want to read the latest collaboration between Ms. Ford and Laura Hayden.

Shirakawa: Stories from a Pacific Northwest Japanese American Community
Published in Paperback by University of Washington Press (July, 2002)
Authors: Stan Flewelling and Gordon Hirabayashi
Average review score:

DAYTON SAYS: BUY THIS BOOK
If you like history...if you like old photos that aid in bringing a story to life...if you like well-written sentences (unlike mine), then you will like this book. Shirakawa documents the lives of a Japanese American community in the Pacific northwest of the United States. This is not the first time I have read a book written or edited by Stan Flewelling. This writer is one who is unknown to the vast reading public, and that, truly, is a shame. As with his other works, Flewelling's Shirakawa has been thoroughly researched and thoughtfully written. If you have not read a book written by Flewelling, may I suggest that you start with Shirakawa. You will delighted that you found this author and his book Shirakawa. It is with pleasure that I give it my rating: DAYTON SAYS: BUY THIS BOOK.

Shooting Back: A Photographic View of Life by Homeless Children
Published in Paperback by Chronicle Books (October, 1991)
Authors: Jim Hubbard and Robert Coles
Average review score:

Image Text
Shooting Back is a wonderful book of images taken by homeless children. The images are photographic stories told by these children "in their own words". The tables are turned on traditional images of homelessness as the children themselves define the area in which they live and the content of their lives. The result is a moving collection of images of homelessness that challenge dominant modes of visualizing poverty and homelessness.

Short Bike Rides in and Around Washington, D.C (3rd Ed.)
Published in Paperback by Globe Pequot Pr (May, 1996)
Authors: Michael Leccese and Paul D. Thomas
Average review score:

A concise and well thought out guide
As a new resident of Washington D.C., this book, "Short Bike Rides: Washington D.C.," has become for my family an invaluable introduction of the area's numerous bike trails and routes. Each route is introduced with a short synopsis of its main attractions and challenges, followed by precise yet easy to follow directions. The book was obviously well researched.

Sick Burn Cut--At Last the Reappearance of Our Lady of the Ugly Ones in Spokane, Washington (Semiotext(e) Native Agents Series)
Published in Paperback by Semiotext (December, 1992)
Authors: Deran Ludd and Deran Ludd
Average review score:

Sick Burn Cut is the best pop-out cut-up novel I've ever rea
A novel for the millenium, Sick Burn Cut takes us back to pre-Microsoft Seattle, the days of Guns 'n Roses. Mary, a man in a dress, captivates and activates a small group of compatriat guerrilla drag queens for whom mere survival is a matter of survival. They take on the Mall Rats and the Dictators, feuding drug lords and gangs - Mary and her companion, Sayid Huysayn. Meanwhile a group of highschool kids in Spokane Washington form a cult of the Divine Virgin Mary. The two Mary's, who are never conscious of each other's existence, begin the spin a web of intrigue with the promise of great meaning lying behind the banality of suburban discontent. I was having a really bad summer, 'til I read this book!!! Deran Ludd is William Burrough's grandson. Which is not to say that Sick Burn Cut is Burroughs redux. Ludd takes the sensibility and tosses it into a 90's context Burroughs could barely have handled ('cuz he was too old).

Silly Sights Washington, Dc

Authors: Jacki L. Drucker and Chris Krupinski
Average review score:

Be silly, and learn something too!
This is a great book. The rhymes are cute, and the illustrations are wonderful. Your kids will really recognize the places they are seeing. The book presents all the top spots for sightseeing in Washington, DC, adding some ridiculous creature to the scene, such as a teddy bear, a gnome, or a group of kangaroos. Don't be surprised if you're driving down Pennsylvania Avenue and your child cries out, "Isn't that the place with the gnome on top?!"
